The cover letter example and template I use

Having a reference example, template or structure for cover letter writing is useful.

Because once you have one, writing your own (for many different roles) gets easier.

Here’s the structure and example I use: (from Build a Career in Data Science)

  • Greeting
  • Introductory paragraph
  • 1-2 paragraphs of data science work examples
  • Closing paragraph
  • Signoff

And here are some of the things I’ve learnt to include in my body paragraphs…

In your introductory paragraph:

  • Express your interest in the specific role you are applying for.
  • Share context behind your interest i.e., what specifically got you interested. This could be because of reading their articles, having a connection at the company (who told you about the work/culture), meeting their people at a conference, etc.

In each paragraph of data science work examples:

  • Set the scene of your example – provide some context (as your first sentence).
  • Share the specific work you did, referencing relevant tools/skills in the job description.
  • Share a link for readers to interact/see the work you created (as your last sentence).

In your closing paragraph:

  • Reinforce your interest in the role and why your experience/examples make you a strong candidate for the role.
  • Thank them for their consideration.

(Credits to Emily Robinson and Jacqueline Nolis, the writers of Build a Career in Data Science, for the inspiration)
